One of the most picturesque cruises we have taken is in the Adriatic Sea and, not surprisingly, into the Greek Isles. What was surprising is how many enchanting walled cities were waiting for us to explore and enjoy in towns along the Adriatic. We have taken multiple cruises in this area out of Venice, Italy, but we actually flew in and out of Rome as a fantastic add on. (For those of you who enjoy afternoon tea, a trip to Babington's in Rome is an absolute must if you are going to be in this part of the world.) Rome was a convenient point to board a high speed train in the morning and easily transfer to Venice a few hours later.
The Mediterranean features many excellent points of departure beyond just Venice and Rome which allow for more sightseeing before and after your cruise. Consider departing from Athens (Piraeus) Greece or Istanbul Turkey, for example.
The typically warm weather and captivating blue water are the perfect combination for an exotic vacation to this remarkably welcoming part of Europe. Round trip cruises out of Italy are usually a week long and can be booked back-to-back with different itineraries if you are lucky enough to be able to spare two weeks or more. Alternatively, a point-to-point itinerary can mean more ports to explore. Sailing in and out of Venice Italy past St. Mark's Square and Basilica and the Doge's Palace and the canals is a surreal experience any time of day. Game of Thrones fans will particularly enjoy a visit to Dubrovnik Croatia, while beach lovers will likely prefer any number of pristine beaches in Greece. Gems like Kotor Montenegro and Split Croatia will surprise and delight you will charming narrow streets and friendly locals. These are places that you will wan to return to again and again.
